Titty Tax

Ladies, we all remember our first time going shopping for a bra don’t we? I think I was about 13, so a bit of a late comer but my god when they arrived , they ARRIVED. One minute two fried eggs, next thing I’m carrying watermelons around, talk about a transition! So let’s go with 13 at a guess; the age I wore my first ‘proper’ bra. I’m saying proper because we all remember the pre bras, if you can even call them that-more like a crop top for sympathy. I remember all my friends had already got their first bra so I asked my mum “when can I have one of those?” “when you’re ready for one”, my mum didn’t want me to feel singled out so she pretended to me that it was like having a real bra but I knew deep down.. it was not, nice try though Jan.

So 13 was the age I did eventually move on from the pity brigade bras and onto the REAL girlie bras. So much choice to pick from! Ah, those were the days. I can’t remember the last time I saw bras in my size that weren’t black, white or bloody beige. You’re probably wondering where I’m getting to here but yes, I’ve always had larger breasts even from a young age, but back then there was always a variety of choice. It’s when I became an adult and my breasts fully grew in. Uh oh, no more choice for you over the size of DD.

I’m a 36FF, yes, my boyfriend is a very lucky boy. No, I’m not going to send you a photo. That’s the exciting bit over for you now lads, the rest of this will probably bore you, enjoy your w**k though!

Being a 36FF girly is tough. I know that sounds SO dramatic, but to be honest, I don’t care. It bloody is. Just a few reasons:

  • Backache

  • Certain clothes fit weird

  • Men forgetting I have a face

  • Judgement from other women (the worst)

  • 0-5% of choice in shops

  • THE PRICE!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know if you can tell but the price infuriates me the most, bigger ladies shouldn’t be paying titty tax! I’m fully aware there are shops online that do sizes FF-GG and even some high street stores but very very very little choice, ironic really isn’t it. If you’re not sure what I mean, places like Yours, Bravissimo, Boux Avenue, I think Ann Summers have a variety too. So, I guess you’re thinking.. there you go, loads of places do larger bust sizes. YES but HAVE you seen the prices? Could they BE anymore expensive? Pardon the ‘friends’ nod (who doesn’t love friends).

I may sound like I’m asking for a lot but as a woman I want to feel sexy, I want to feel proud of my body and be excited to treat myself to new underwear but going into shops searching for a nice bra is stressful more than fun. The bigger bras are always out of the way, boring colours or older looking colours I’ve never heard anyone say “Oh, I feel so sexy in my brown and beige bra”. We have come a long way with curvier clothing but personally, I don’t think quite enough. Some people are so narrow minded to think that big sizes are for fat people so ‘just lose weight’ it’s not always the case, Lady Gaga said it first ‘we were born this way baby!‘

I’m fully aware our country has a lot of obesity issues but due to the stereotype, it can feel shameful shopping for size 16 clothes and 36ff bras and having to walk out of the shop with either bland clothes or nothing at all. Whilst seeing plenty other girls and women with bags full of everything they probably went in for. Even though I have big breasts and a big booty, my waist is smaller so its a struggle finding the correct clothing in general and it makes me feel judged when I’m searching for size 18 bottoms. I am quite lucky that despite it all, I am happy with my body shape but that doesn’t mean some days I just wish for better, I think we all do? But 90% of the time lets love ourselves, shall we? We only have one body, one life, treasure it.

In saying that, I do sometimes wish for smaller body features mainly due to the hassle of it all, which is such a shame. honestly, if the prices were lower and if there was more choice, I would feel 100% times better and way more confident. It can sometimes feel embarrassing and it shouldn’t be like that. I don’t know if that’s just me, let me know if you ever feel this way too.

I understand that more materials are needed to make the larger sizes and there’s more pay towards making them etc.. but that’s not our fault, why is it fair that we are paying for it? Before you think it.. bras are NOT a luxury, especially for my bigger ladies. I don’t even mind that the larger the size, the bigger the price (not that it should be) but give us a break, £20-£40 to secure my breasts and back is a tad harsh. We pay enough as it is, don’t add the titty tax on top of that. All in favour, say hi!
